Doctors should advise patients to carefully follow all manufacturer's instructions provided with each specific type of foam, jelly, cream, or suppository. Shaving foams at least 20 times before the application to ensure that sperm and barrier substance are properly mixed. Fill the applicator as indicated. Keep an extra foam supply in your hand as it is sometimes difficult to determine how much sperm is left in a container. Clean the applicator after each use, and do not fold at least 8 hours after the intercourse. Spermicides are not 100% effective, but their effectiveness can increase by combining them with other methods such as condoms. Women who use diaphragms should also use a spermicide. Diaphragms with sperm cream or jelly should not be inserted more than 6 hours before the intercourse. Although some birth defect reports have been submitted to women who used sperm after becoming pregnant, most experts believe that there is insufficient evidence to support an association. Women who use contraceptives and experience a late menstrual period have 3 options. They may continue to use sperm until a pregnancy is confirmed, switch to another form of contraception, or refrain from sexual intercourse until they know if they are pregnant.
