Nutritional data and benefits for grapefruit health Barbie Cervoni MS, RD, CDCES, CDN, is a registered dietitian and specialist in diabetes care and certified education. Mia Syn, MS, RDN is a diet nutritionist registered with a science teacher in human nutrition. She is also the host of Good Food Friday at ABC News 4. Very well / Alexandra Shytsman Grapefruit is a hybrid of orange and grapefruit that originated in Barbados in the 18th century. Today, subtropical fruit can be found throughout the year in most grocery stores. The interior can be white, pink or ruby. Bright yellow skin can vary from relatively thin to thick. Many people choose to eat grapefruit in half raw and powder with sugar or honey. But it can also be grilled, warmed or served as a dessert in a variety of recipes. The grapefruit can be added to salads, sauces or slices and used to fish. Because it is low in calories and a good source of fiber and vitamin C, grapefruit can be a smart addition to your diet. Nutritional grapefruit data The following nutritional information is provided by USDA for a half of raw, medium, pink or red grapefruit (123g) of approximately 3/4" in diameter. Carbs Fruit is a low carbohydrate fruit. Half of a medium grapefruit contains less carbohydrates and sugar than a typical portion of fruit. According to the USDA data, there are about 13 grams of carbohydrates in half grapefruit. Most of the carbohydrate comes from naturally corridod sugar (8.5g). There are also 2 grams of fiber in half grapefruit. It is estimated that the glycemic load of half grapefruit (no added sugar or honey) is 4. Fats There's hardly any fat in grapefruit. Half of a medium grapefruit has approximately 0.2g of fat. Protein There's less than a gram of protein in half a grapefruit. Vitamins and Minerals The grapefruit is an excellent source of vitamin C, which provides almost 64% of your daily needs in a single portion. It is also an excellent source of beta carotene (which the body becomes vitamin A), providing 28% of its daily needs. The grapefruit provides small amounts of certain minerals, such as potassium, calcium and magnesium. Health benefits Pomel vitamins provide various health benefits. Supports Healing Vitamin C is necessary for healing the wound in the body. Both animal and human studies have shown that tissue repair and wound repair occur faster with vitamin C supplementation. But researchers are not sure if this benefit applies to those who are not deficient in vitamin. Promotes Ocular Health Vitamin A, provided by grapefruit in the precursor form of beta carotene, is important for normal vision. Vitamin A may also play a role in the management of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Studies have shown that taking supplements containing vitamin A, vitamin C and other nutrients can reduce the risk of developing advanced DMA by 25%. Other experts have researched important key nutrient dietary sources for eye health. In a published study, grapefruit and grapefruit juice were listed as key dietary sources. It can help prevent cancer The pink grapefruit contains the antioxidant, which gives it its beautiful pink tone. A 2015 study suggested that eating a lycopene-rich diet might lower the risk of prostate cancer. But the issue of prevention of vitamin C and cancer has been debated with heat and researchers are not sure if vitamin C supplements or consumption of more vitamin C foods can actually provide this benefit. Supports heart heat Research has shown that eating grapefruit is associated with lower LDL cholesterol ("bad") and higher levels of HDL cholesterol ("good") in the blood. It can also help reduce blood pressure in overweight adults. Researchers who study cardiovascular risk factors have investigated the consumption of grapefruits along with the consumption of other fruits such as blueberries, grenades and apples. In a published review, the authors of the study concluded that other fruits were associated with greater health benefits of the heart, but that the consumption of fruits, in general, is likely to help modulate conditions related to hypertension, dyslipemia, diabetes and overweight/obesity. Reduce inflammation Fruits contain flavanones that are a subclass of flavonoids. Flavonoids have been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory, antitrombogen, antidiabetic, anti-diabetic, anticancer and neuroprotective activities. Allergies There are reports of citrus allergies, but the condition is considered uncommon. So while grapefruit allergies are possible, but it is not likely. If you have a citrus allergy you should avoid grapefruit. Adverse effects You should not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice if you take lipid medications (cholesterol reducers) called statins. These may include medicines such as Zocor (simvastatin) or Lipitor (atorvastatin). Pomel compounds can interact with enzymes in their intestines that help your body absorb some types of statins. Interference may affect statin medication levels in your blood. Drug interactions According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), grapefruit and grapefruit juice may also interfere with other prescription and over-the-counter medicines. The grapefruit contains a class of compounds called furanocoumarins, which act in the body to alter the characteristics of certain types of medications. Pomel can be contraindicated with medications such as antihistamines, thyroid replacement drugs, contraception, stomach acid blocking drugs, and dextrometorfa supressor cough. In addition, Procardia and Adalat CC blood pressure medications (both niphedipin) can interact with grapefruit. Anti-antarget drugs such as buspirone, corticosteroids and certain organ rejection drugs can also be less effective if they consume grapefruit. Ingesting grapefruit with these medications can cause the body to metabolize medications abnormally. If you take any medication, ask your doctor if it is safe to make grapefruit a regular part of your diet. Variants The grapefruit varieties include rose, white or red ruby. The ruby red is the most common and easy to find. They are known for their softer taste and bright red interior bright. Pink grapefruit is also common, but not so sweet. The white grapefruit has a pale and yellow colour on the outside and a pink, white inside. White grapefruits produce the finest juice. In terms of calories and macronutrients, nutritional profiles are similar for grapefruits of any tone. When it's better The grapefruit season goes from October to June. But you can find grapefruit in most grocery stores throughout the year. When you buy, you find grapefruit that doesn't have a green color on the outside. Avoid the fruit that has soft spots or wax areas. Jump candy that has rough or wrinkled skin. As a general thumb rule, a grapefruit that seems heavier for its size will be juicy. As you hold the grapefruit in your hand, you must feel heavier than it seems. It is believed that the antioxidant content of the citrus fruit increases as it matures, so choosing a fully rigid grapefruit is ideal. Storage and Food Safety If you plan to eat your grapefruit immediately, leave it at room temperature. If you're saving it for later, it's okay to store grapefruit in the refrigerator. Place the fruit in a plastic bag and place it in the transparent compartment. Refrigerated, whole grapefruit can stay fresh for up to six weeks. The grapefruit can be frozen, but it is better to remove the fruit sections and place them in a safe container to freeze the whole fruit. Frozen grapefruit should stay good up to one year if it is properly frozen. Like many citrus fruit crusts, the grapefruit shell is safe to consume. It even contains some fibers and other nutrients. You will want to wash the fruit before consumption as it can contain bacteria or rubble. Simply rinse the fruit with cold water and brush the outside with a vegetable brush. How to prepare The fruit makes a great appetizer or part of a meal. If you match the fruit with a side rich in proteins like yogurt or a small handful of nuts, you can make a more full snack. The easiest way to eat is to dig with a spoon, but can also be used to add flavor, texture and color to sweet and tasty recipes. Try the pairing of grapefruit with avocado and vegetables for a refreshing citrus salad, or cut a bit of grapefruit to make a sweet, flavor of meat cake. Many recipes combine healthy for the heart with ruby red grapefruit. The pairing is beautiful to look and nutritious. It is also incredibly tasty, as the creaminess of the avocado blends perfectly with the sweet and bitter taste of the grapefruit.
